Los Angeles, Krabi, Koh Lanta
Last June I convinced my parents that my friend Alonzo was coming to L.A. from Beijing and needed to stay with them, as well as be picked up at the airport. Instead, I was the one who rushed through the LAX customs gate to surprise them.
This time, I was the one in shock, as I entered the arrivals hall to find my mother cradling a pug!

They adopted her in November and had been keeping her a secret for nearly a month already to surprise me. Her name is Xie Xie (my parents know how to say "thank you" in both Mandarin and Cantonese), but of course my mom has to spell it "Shay Shay" on the forms at the vet and on her tag for clarity. She...is...so...cute. And so is Bailey, the other new rescued dog, a very sweet Cavalier who has to take bipolar medications to treat his anxiety when going on walks.

L.A. was full of old friends to see, great afternoons driving my dad's car, excessive amounts of Mexican food, seeing a few good music shows, lots of movies to watch, even trundling down to Chinatown one afternoon to attempt visiting the Ooga Booga store (which of course was closed, as sporadically-operated artist-run shops often are). It was so strange to hear Cantonese again after a few weeks, and I felt quite at home for a moment. Also a few firsts: attending a houseparty in Pasadena, drinking at a bar in the valley, feeling very grown-up on Christmas. And a particularly sad last: stopping into Aron's Records on Highland, site of so many high school afternoon crate-diggings and band-discoveries and crush-watchings, which is now going out of business. I guess it was inevitable, and is kind of impressive they've lasted this long since the behemoth of Amoeba moved in up the street.

Then back to HK for about 24 hours, and on to Thailand's Andaman coast for six days of beach bumming. Krabi, then the idyllic Koh Lanta.
Snorkeled, Tuk-tuk-ed, ate bat rays, saw starfish, fed tiny temple cats, drank maekhong, spent an afternoon on a secret beach... now, unfortunately, back to the real world.
